Read on to learn more!
Planning Around Mother Nature
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that one of the biggest considerations for finding an outdoor wedding is contending with Mother Nature’s unpredictability. As Albertans know all too well (psst, here’s the inside scoop if you’re planning from afar!), weather can be fickle regardless of the season, especially in the mountains. Besides being aware of typical weather conditions, you’ll also want to plan ahead and ensure that you and your guests have options available if Mother Nature decides to mix things up on your wedding day. Typical seasonal weather for the Banff National Park region is as follows:
Spring (April to June) – Cool with occasional rain showers and even the odd snowfall. Bring options to help stay warm and footwear that can handle wet ground!Summer (July to August) – Summer can be quite warm, with long daylight hours that make the season a favourite for wedding couples. Rainfall and thunderstorms can occur, as can windy days that make the area feel much cooler. Come prepared with sunscreen and options to help you and your guests stay cool and hydrated, with light jackets or shawls available should the weather turn.
Fall (September to October) – Fall is a gorgeous time of year in the park, with trees exploding into vibrant colours. Temperatures tend to vary widely from warm to cool and breezy, meaning you’ll want to have flexible options on hand.
Winter (November to March) – Banff is a well-known winter wonderland. Those wishing to get married outside will be treated to beautiful views, but should prepare for significantly colder temperatures and conditions. When planning an outdoor wedding, it’s important to have a contingency plan for your venue should inclement weather occur and ensure that everyone’s wedding attire is flexible enough to accommodate the varying weather conditions that occur in the mountains. Couples booking their wedding with Elope in Banff enjoy the extra peace of mind of knowing that we’ll always do our best to have a backup indoor location ready so your special day can go ahead, even if the weather decides not to cooperate.
Accessibility and Logistics
While there’s no denying that getting married in the great outdoors gives you an unforgettable setting, it’s important to consider practical aspects like the accessibility needs of your wedding party when looking at locations. Rugged terrain and more remote locations often aren’t as viable for those with mobility concerns, and you’ll also want to think about logistics like parking or transport options where necessary (accessing Moraine Lake, for example). Elope in Banff is happy to help you find an outdoor location that meets your needs, or to suggest indoor options as an alternative should you decide that works best for your ceremony.
Selecting the Perfect Spot
With these base considerations handled, it’s time to focus on finding the perfect spot for your ceremony. Banff National Park, as well as Canmore (located just outside park boundaries in the Bow Valley Region), offer no shortage of breathtaking locations to consider for your elopement, including:
Banff National Park
- Lake Louise
- Moraine Lake
- Multiple sites just outside the township
Canmore
- Silvertip Resort Gazebo
- Rundleview Parkette
- Quarry Lake, and more.
Elope in Banff will help you find a spot that meets your needs and fits your vision for the perfect little big day!
Logistics for Photography, etc.
One aspect that couples that aren’t familiar with Banff National Park (or Alberta in general) may not be aware of is the sheer size and scope of the region. The park spans 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 square miles), with many of the spots listed above being located a significant distance. Lake Louise, for example, is located approximately 40-45 minutes away from Banff, and those wishing to travel to Moraine Lake will need to allow for at least another 30 minutes in travel time. While we often get couples who want to feature all of Canada’s most iconic natural landmarks in their wedding photos, it’s important to remember that travel time alone can often make it infeasible to do so. While you can always visit other areas before and after your wedding, we recommend focusing on the backdrop you love most to help narrow down your venue selection and ensure your wedding photos meet the most important part of your vision for your special day.
